Van de oude, 17de/18de eeuwse haven van Algiers resten nog slechts wat afzonderlijke monumenten, maar het aanzien ervan werd na de Franse bezetting in 1830 volledig gewijzigd. De karakteristieke moelje (de pier) bestaat nog steeds, maar is ingebed in moderne constructies en eigenlijk niet meer te herkennen, in ieder geval niet zoals hij er vroeger moet hebben bijgelegen. Ook van de bagno's is niets meer terug te vinden.

Voor de sfeer van het oude Algiers zijn we daarom aangewezen op schilderijen. Hieronder een impressie.

Of the old seventeenth- and eighteenth-century harbour of Algiers, only a few isolated monuments remain, while its appearance was completely transformed after the French occupation in 1830. The characteristic moelje (the pier) still exists, but it has been absorbed into modern harbour structures and is no longer recognisable, at least not as it must once have appeared. Nothing at all remains of the bagnios.
